Jewish Federations of North America have raised triple the amount of their original goal of their Ukraine emergency campaign, launched on February 24th, 2022, the day that war broke out in Ukraine.
Funds have been allocated to over forty-six NGO’s that are operating on the ground in Ukraine and neighboring countries, including our core partner agencies, The Jewish Agency for Israel, The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), and World ORT. Distributions of funds have focused on humanitarian aid and rescue operations, trauma relief and medical care, refugee resettlement and aliyah and absorption in Israel.
Our most recent allocation, amounting to $1.2 million, went toward organizations such as Hadassah Medical Organization for medical delegations and trauma units, the Israel Trauma Coalition for trauma relief, and Nefesh B'Nefesh for immigrant absorption.
Jewish Federations were uniquely positioned to respond immediately and effectively to the crisis due to our long presence in the region supporting our partners in Ukraine and neighboring countries, coupled with our vast reach across North American Jewish communities and decades-long experience raising funds for global crises. Jewish Federations invest over $100 million annually in core, unrestricted funding to our partners to ensure that they have the infrastructure to support vulnerable Jewish communities and to respond to emergencies that arise.
“There are moments in time when humanity is called upon to take action to shape history. We are living in one of those times and I am so proud to know that the Jewish community is at the forefront of these efforts,” said Jewish Federations of North America President and CEO Eric Fingerhut.
Funds raised for this campaign are also supporting the Jewish Federations’ creation of a first-of-its-kind central volunteer hub to provide much-needed services on the ground through our partner aid organizations. 64 Russian-speaking volunteers have already been deployed to Budapest, Warsaw and the Ukraine border.
In addition to direct support, Jewish Federations successfully advocate for expanded refugee rights and resettlement, building on a long history of activism in the refugee space. Federations are unique in their multi-pronged support of refugees through humanitarian aid, government advocacy, and on-the-ground assistance through skilled volunteers.
