Jewish Federations of North America applaud the U.S Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance for launching the $7.7 million Enhancing Security Measures for Houses of Worship Grant Program. This significant new initiative will help faith-based institutions and local law enforcement work together to prevent and respond to hate-motivated crimes.
  

Jewish Federations advocated for the creation of this program in the FY26 appropriations cycle, alongside the Orthodox Union. 

The new program includes $4 million to help faith-based organizations install professional-grade security camera systems, improve evidence preservation capabilities, and enhance coordination with local law enforcement, and an additional $3.7 million to support state and local law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement can use the grant to cover overtime costs for officers providing a visible security presence during religious services, events, and other high-risk gatherings.  

Together, these investments will strengthen security, improve emergency response capabilities, and help deter future acts of violence. 

This new program reflects the growing recognition that protecting houses of worship requires a strong partnership among religious communities, local law enforcement, and the federal government. Jewish Federations have long advocated for increased federal investments in community security and law enforcement resources, recognizing the threatening environment Jewish institutions continue to face.

Jewish Federations also continue to advocate for Congress to increase funding to the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) and pass the Jewish American Security Act (JASA) into law. Among other things, JASA would provide long-term authorization for the new Enhancing Security Measures for Houses of Worship Grant Program. These programs will help keep Americans secure as we gather to pray and participate in communal life.
